  1. Installation Procedure for Full Bible Version
  2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  4. Hardware Requirements
  5. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  6.  
  7. - IBM XT, AT or compatible computer
  8. - at least 384K memory
  9. - hard disk drive C: (or another drive)
  10.     - 14 megabytes for AV-Darby
  11.     -  1 megabyte for Greek Version
  12.     -  3 megabytes for Hebrew Version
  13.     - 16 megabytes for Bilingual Versions
  14.          (English-Foreign language-Englishman's Strong's Numbers)
  15.     - Treasury of Scripture Knowledge Verse Notes
  16.        7 megabytes

  19. Software Requirements
  20. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  21. - almost any current version of MS-DOS, PC-DOS, DR DOS works
  22.  
  23. - DOS 1.00 to 2.10 and 4.00 do NOT work
  24. - DOS 2.11 to 3.31 and 4.01 to 5.00 do work
  25.     - (DOS 4.00 is NOT supported; it is too buggy. Only
  26.        a few copies were circulated, mainly in Europe)
  27.  
  28. - DR DOS 3.41 - 6.00
  29.     - program MAY run on earlier versions of DRDOS
  30.       but DRDOS is NOT 100% compatible with DOS,
  31.       so some things may not work
  32.  
  33. - DOS BOX under OS/2 version 1.1 & 1.3, 2.0
  34.  
  35. - enter VER at DOS prompt if you don't know what version you have
  36.     - some DOS 4.01 versions are updated with a patch and show
  37.       a version of 4.00 even though it is version 4.01
  38.  
  39. Media Requirements
  40. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  41. - 5 1/4" 360K disk package should include:
  42.     - an INSTALLATION DISK to install ALL modules
  43.     - a TEXT module for each Bible version
  44.         - AV-DBY = Authorised Version & Darby text with Strong's #'s (11 disks)
  45.         - AV-NIV = Combined AV and NIV (12 disks)
  46.         - AV-RSV = Combined AV and RSV (12 disks)
  47.         - Classical Greek & Hebrew Package (8 disks)
  48.     - CROSS REFERENCE module (2 disks)
  49.     - TOPICS module (4 disks)
  50.     - New Testament Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (8 Disks)
  51.     - the Greek and Hebrew LEXICONS (4 disks)
  52.         -lexicons work with AV-DBY, AV-NIV, and AV-RSV
  53.          and bilingual versions
  54. - if you have 720k disks, about 1/2 the number of disks are needed.
  55. - if you have 1440k disks, about 1/4 the number of disks are needed.

  57. Shareware Versions of Authorised Version
  58. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  59. If you downloaded your copy from a bulletin board you should have 22 ZIPPED
  60. files. Format 22 disks and unzip the files to each of these disks. If you use
  61. 720k or 1440k disks and wish to distribute it using these disks, read topic
  62. 9903 after you have installed the program.
  63.  
  64. If you do not want to become very frustrated, take 5 minutes and label your
  65. disks as follows:
  66.  
  67. 1) If the disk contains a file install.exe, label it the Install disk
  68. 2) If the disk contains a series of files av-dby.001, av-dby.002,
  69.    ... av-dby.911, label the series the "AV-DBY Text Module" 1, 2, ... 11.
  70. 3) If the disk contains a series of files cxref.001 and cxref.902
  71.    label the series the "Cross References" 1 & 2.
  72. 4) If the disk contains a series of files topics.001 ... topics 904,
  73.    label the series the "Topics" 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  74. 5) If the disk contains a series of files lexicon.001 ... lexicon 904,
  75.    label the series the "Lexicons" 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  76. 6) New Testament Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, tsk.001, tsk.002, tsk.903,
  77.    label the series the "TSK" 1, 2 & 3.

  79. Select option A on the install menu repeatily to install all these modules.

  81. Time Requirements
  82. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  83. - installation takes about this long for the full Authorised & Darby Version
  84.  
  85.    - 30 minutes, 4.77 MHZ 8088 (XT)
  86.    - 20 minutes, 6.00 MHZ 286  (AT)
  87.    - 15 minutes, 25.0 MHZ 386  (AT class)

  89. Installation is Easy
  90. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  91. 1) Verify you have the correct hardware, software and media
  92.  
  93. 2) PUT WRITE PROTECT TABS ON DISKS
  94.  
  95. 3) If you have a version 3.03 or earlier installed,
  96.  
  97.    a) delete everything EXCEPT your notes directories
  98.    b) create directory on hard drive used to install Online Bible
  99.         e.g. md c:\bible
  100.    c) for each note directory, copy as follows
  101.         md   c:\bible\notes.000
  102.         copy c:\notes.000 c:\bible\notes.000
  103.         del  c:\notes.000
  104.         rd   c:\notes.000
  105.         .
  106.         .
  107.         .
  108.         md   c:\bible\notes.300
  109.         copy c:\notes.300 c:\bible\notes.300
  110.         del  c:\notes.300
  111.         rd   c:\notes.000
  112.     d) the installation marks your notes so the verse display
  113.        shows which verses have notes.
  114.     e) if you are unsure about how to do this, get a friend to help.
  115.  
  116. 4) Make the floppy drive which contains the installation
  117.    disk your default drive, (i.e. set DOS prompt to A: or B:)
  118.  
  119. 5) Enter GO from A: or B: DOS prompt to install the program
  120.    DO NOT COPY DISKS ONTO HARD DRIVE - install from A: or B: drive
  121.  
  122. 6) Reboot system after installation is complete
  123.  
  124. 7) Use the mini-menu, MM to start the program.
  125.  
  126. Installing if you have no C drive
  127. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  128. Normally a hard disk is installed and accessed using the drive letter C.
  129. Some machines, e.g. Texas Instruments, install their hard drive at E.
  130. There is no hard drive at either C or D. To run the install for these
  131. machines, specify the drive letter as follows:
  132.  
  133.    install e
  134.  
  135. Network Installation
  136. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  137. - on a NOVELL or other network make sure the LASTDRIVE parameter
  138.   is correctly set in CONFIG.SYS to match the highest drive letter
  139.   used by the network.
  140. - install program on a node in the network and than copy all the
  141.   files to the main server.
  142.  
  143. Problems
  144. ~~~~~~~~
  145. 1) Data errors reading disks
  146.    - almost always caused by irregular spots ("dropouts") on disks,
  147.      but occasionally by actual disk damage (from a magnet, etc.),
  148.      and very rarely by dirty or poorly aligned read/write heads
  149.    - specify "Retry" to the DOS "Data error reading drive.." message
  150.    - Retry at least 50 times before giving up (this USUALLY works).
  151.      certain utilities such as PC Tools Compress (Surface) may work
  152.    - try on someone else's system
  153.        - if it works, COPY (don't DISKCOPY) the files to a better disk,
  154.          clean your drive heads and try again
  155.        - if it fails, reorder replacement disks from supplier
  156.  
  157. 2) Installation fails or mysteriously aborts
  158.  
  159.     - you are likely running some sort of menu system that
  160.       has caused the installation to fail
  161.     - if you are running DOS 4.00, upgrade to DOS 4.01 or DOS 5.00
  162.       or some other release. DOS 4.00 is so buggy it is hopeless.
  163.     - boot system from your original DOS disk
  164.     - retry installation
  165.     - if it fails, call for help
  166.  
  167. 3) VIRUS infection detected
  168.     - the installation disk must have the following files
  169.         go.bat, bible.901, view.com, install.exe, choose.exe,
  170.         install.901, read.me, sharewar.doc, tutorial.doc
  171.     - if these are altered, CRT displays VIRUS infection message
  172.       and stops the installation.
  173.     - this means the disk has been altered or is damaged.
  174.     - get replacement from distributors.
  175.     - check your computer for virus infections
  176.  
  177. 4) CRC errors during installation
  178.  
  179.     - disks altered by distributors or damaged
  180.     - get replacements from distributors
  181.  
  182. 5) Installation ok, but program aborts with "Undefined File(4)" message
  183.  
  184.     - update CONFIG.SYS to specify 20 files
  185.     - some machines like the Tandy 1000RL or PS/1 can be configured
  186.       so CONFIG.SYS is in ROM.
  187.         - the set up information for the computer must be changed
  188.         - change this so it is on the C drive.
  189.         - see your hardware manual for your machine or your dealer for details
  190.     - see DOS manual for details
  191.  
  192. 6) Install fails trying to access your C drive and your hard drive is
  193.    installed at some other letter
  194.  
  195.     - install again and specify your hard drive letter
  196.       - if your only hard drive is at the letter E: run install as follows
  197.  
  198.            install e
  199.  
  200. Conclusion
  201. ~~~~~~~~~~
  202. - if you have corrupted disks, get replacements from the one
  203.     you got them from
  204. - if you get stuck
  205.   - REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM FROM YOUR ORIGINAL DOS DISK IN DRIVE A
  206.     AND RETRY INSTALLATION
  207.   - TRY INSTALLING ON SOMEONE ELSE'S MACHINE
  208.         BEFORE CALLING ANYONE
  209. - if you are still stuck, ask friend for help who knows about DOS
  210. - if you are still stuck, call your distributor
  211. - if he is stumped, write or call
  212.

  218.                       TWO important rules...

  222.                   1. Press "RETRY" up to 50 times if you
  223.                      get a "DATA ERROR" while installing.
  224.                      Sometimes opening and closing the drive
  225.                      latch and reinserting the disk fixes the
  226.                      problem.
  227.  
  228.                   2. If INSTALL fails mysterously, redo
  229.                      eliminating ANY program, device,
  230.                      menu, shell, RAM disk or file manager
  231.                      from memory.  ONLY DOS in memory. It's
  232.                      BEST to REBOOT from A: Drive using
  233.                      a plain DOS system disk.
